Comenius University is the oldest and largest university in Slovakia. This was founded in 1919 and follows the tradition of Academia Istropolitana since 1465. The university took its name from Jan Amos Komensky (Comenius) – a “teacher of nations”, clergyman and education reformer, who was born in a nearby small town of Moravia. He was famous as an outstanding personality of the European History (1592-1670). With his influence on the methods and contents of education, he became the founder of Modern Pedagogy. He also set as principle the idea of equal rights for all students, women also included. He traveled to Sweden, England and other European countries, and in 1650 he came back to Hungary, where he wrote the “Visible World in Pictures”, which was the first illustrated book for children’s education. Then, he settled in Amsterdam, where he died in 1670. Comenius University is a classic institution. Currently, more than 25,000 students, also included approximately 1,000 from 45 countries around the world, are studying in the thirteen (13) Faculties of Comenius University.
