Charles University has seventeen (17) faculties, five (5) out of which are medical faculties. Three of these faculties are located in Prague, one in Hradec Kralove and the other one in Pilsen.
This is the oldest university of the Central Europe. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, king of Bohemia. Over its long history and the sociopolitical changes or upheavals of each era the university faced various phases. In 1848, during the great revolutions in Europe, the university had been divided in two sections, a German and a Czech one. This division lasted until 1939.
Charles University exists in its present form since 1918 when the Czechoslovak nation was established, a national entity that gave to the university the academic and cultural value gained through the ages.
The turbulent 20th century, full of wars and revolutions, has affected at times the university life, but Charles University has always maintained its status as one of the major Universities of Central Europe. It is ranked in the 35th place in Europe (according to the evaluation of London TIMES).
